Fatal car crashes in Connecticut, county by county

From 2020 through 2024, 1,586 people died in 1,478 crashes on Connecticut roads. That is 8.6 deaths a year for every 100,000 residents, below the US rate of 12.1, and the 43rd highest rate of the 50 states and DC.

New Haven County had the most deaths (438). The road stretch with the most fatal crashes was I-84 (E-706) in Hartford County (45). In 2024, 310 people were killed, 4% more than in 2020.

  2. Know your deadline

    Connecticut gives you two years to file a personal injury lawsuit (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 52-584). If a city, county or state vehicle was involved: For injuries caused by a defective road or bridge, written notice must be given within 90 days of the injury (to the municipal clerk, or to the Commissioner of Transportation for state roads). Other municipal negligence claims have separate notice rules not checked here.
