Reports taken by city police or a sheriff

Every officer's written report goes to ITD within 24 hours of finishing the investigation (Idaho Code 49-1306(1)), so city and county reports are in the same ITD database; the investigating police department may also release its own copy.

The form

Officers in Idaho write crash reports on the Idaho traffic accident report (form approved by ITD). Most boxes on it hold numeric codes for things like contributing factors, injuries and road conditions.

When you must call the police

Immediately, if anyone is injured or killed or damage to any one person's property is over $1,500 (Idaho Code 49-1305(1))

After you have the report

Idaho gives you two years to file a personal injury lawsuit (Idaho Code § 5-219(4)). Every Idaho deadline and fault rule.

Idaho is an at-fault state: the driver who caused the crash, through their liability insurance, pays for the injuries and damage.

1,215 people died in crashes in Idaho from 2020 to 2024 (NHTSA FARS). See the record for your county.
