Reports taken by city police or a sheriff

For a non-reportable crash, ask the police department or sheriff called to the scene: "Please contact the department called to the scene. An incident report should be on file at that office." Some sheriffs' offices also sell reports directly (Hancock County: $15.00).

The form

Officers in Maine write crash reports on the Maine Motor Vehicle Crash Report. Most boxes on it hold numeric codes for things like contributing factors, injuries and road conditions. The state publishes the key to those codes:

When you must call the police

Immediately, if anyone is injured or killed or apparent property damage is $2,000 or more (a 'reportable accident' on a public way or where public traffic may reasonably be anticipated) (29-A M.R.S. 2251(1)-(2))

After you have the report

Maine gives you six years to file a personal injury lawsuit (Me. Rev. Stat. tit. 14, § 752). Every Maine deadline and fault rule.

Maine is an at-fault state: the driver who caused the crash, through their liability insurance, pays for the injuries and damage.

811 people died in crashes in Maine from 2020 to 2024 (NHTSA FARS). See the record for your county.
