Fatal car crashes in Maine, county by county

From 2020 through 2024, 811 people died in 751 crashes on Maine roads. That is 11.5 deaths a year for every 100,000 residents, about the same as the US rate of 12.1, and the 29th highest rate of the 50 states and DC.

York County had the most deaths (112). The road stretch with the most fatal crashes was US-1 (Van Buren Rd) in Aroostook County (16). In 2024, 177 people were killed, 8% more than in 2020.

    Maine gives you six years to file a personal injury lawsuit (Me. Rev. Stat. tit. 14, § 752). If a city, county or state vehicle was involved: A written notice of claim against a governmental entity must be filed within 365 days after the claim accrues (later only if the claimant shows good cause).
